5 Tips How to Ride with Style

ride-with-style3I love riding a bike since I was a little girl. It was hard for me to learn to ride at first, but once I got used to it, I could ride for hours. When I started school I stopped riding a bike because my school was too far from home.

Two years ago I visited Munich where a lot of people were riding too. When I came back to London I bought myself a pink bicycle. It’s vintage and it’s perfect for an urban riding.

I used to ride from home to work every day when I was working in an office. It felt great to ride 15 km a day and it’s a much more pleasant way to move on than the public transport or a car stuck in traffic.

Some people think that when you ride you should put on a sporty outfit, but it’s not true. You can ride wearing whatever you want – dress, jeans, skirt, suit. In Milan I saw a woman in pencil dress and high heels riding a bike while it was raining. She held the bike with one hand and an umbrella with the other.

So, if you are a fashion lover and a bike lover at the same time I have some tips how to ride with style.

Lovely dress

As I said, it’s no problem to ride a bike wearing a dress. Just pick one that is not too short and tight. You won’t feel comfortable in it and the people on the street may take a look at your underwear. Riding with a long dress is also not a very good idea because it could thicken around your chain wheel and you could fall on the ground. A perfect ride a bike dress is knee-high and neglige. Here is a great tip how to wear your dress while riding so that it doesn’t get up.

Warm jacket

Being a chick on a bike doesn’t mean you should be cold. I recommend that you always take a jacket or a cardigan with you. Sometimes it suddenly gets colder and you could catch cold on your way home. Even if it’s warm, a good idea is to wear a scarf that protects your throat.

Take off your high heels

I’m sure you’ve seen on street style blogs women posing next to bikes on high heels, but in real life it doesn’t work this way. It’s not impossible to ride a bike with high heels, but it increases the chances to fall off the bike. Besides, you could damage your favourite pair of sandals. I ride my bike with sneakers or flats and I carry my high heels in my bike basket.

Big Bag

If you don’t have a basket where you can put your bag during the ride, choose a backpack. It will be totally in this season too, so you are going to be a real fashionista while riding your bike. I love the Chanel bag, but I can’t afford it, so I found a lovely black backpack that is very comfortable and holds everything I need for a smooth ride.

Vintage bike

The most important part of your appearance when you ride is, of course, the bicycle itself. I love vintage bikes so I bought a vintage Puch. There are modern bikes customised to look vintage too, but they are more expensive. Buying a secondhand bike is not a bad idea, but make sure it’s serviceable before you hit the road. If you want something special for your bike, find a local artist who can draw something on it or make a unique basket for your bike.

Riding a bike in the city is not a sport, but a way of expressing yourself and feeling good about yourself. Devil’s in the details so put on some nice and comfortable clothes and hit the road.
